Character Name Generator

Grounded human-style names with a surname. Choose a role, gender and era to match the character’s place in the story.

When to use it

Use this generator for grounded human characters in contemporary or historical fiction, scripts and roleplay — the kind of people who need a believable first name and surname rather than an invented fantasy title. It suits protagonists, side characters, mentors and antagonists in stories set in the real world or a world close to it. Because it pairs first and last names together, you can hear how the full name sounds before committing, which is harder to judge when you pick each half separately. For broader advice on matching a name to a character, see the guide to choosing a name. For invented, otherworldly names use the Fantasy Name Generator instead.

How to use it

Set a Role to bias the surname toward the character’s place in the story — Hero and Mentor lean toward steady, familiar surnames, Villain toward harder-edged ones, Rogue toward sharper, quicker names. Use Gender to return girl or boy leaning first names, and Era to shift between modern and historical surname styles. Generate a batch, then Generate again for fresh combinations. Names you have already seen are skipped first, so repeated clicks keep surfacing new options. Copy any name with a tap, or copy the whole batch at once.

Questions

Are these names unique or free to use?
NameAThing claims no ownership over the names it generates, but it cannot guarantee a name is unique, available as a username or domain, or free of trademarks. If you plan to use a name commercially, check trademarks, domains and platform availability yourself.
Why a first and last name?
Most grounded human characters need both. Pairing them here lets you hear how the full name sounds together before you commit.
What does the Era control do?
Modern leans toward contemporary surnames; Historical leans toward older, more formal surnames suited to period fiction.
